California Kind released their newest single, an upbeat and original take on the Grateful Dead’s “Tennessee Jed,” on Friday, April 17, 2020. California Kind combines the new artistry of singer/songwriter/guitarist Katie Skene with jam-band notables John Molo (Bruce Hornsby & The Range, Phil Lesh & Friends, David Nelson Band), Barry Sless (David Nelson Band, Chris Robinson’s Green Leaf Rustlers, Moonalice), Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, David Nelson Band), and Rob Barraco (Dark Star Orchestra, Phil Lesh & Friends). This version of “Tennessee Jed” was arranged by guitarist Barry Sless and is a departure from the original version, with a faster, more driving groove. The song was produced, engineered and mixed by Grammy award-winning engineer Ross Hogarth (TajMo, Rita Coolidge, Ziggy Marley) and will be followed by a continuous stream of single releases, with a full album release later in 2020.

Each band member pulls on their deep familiarity and love for the Grateful Dead catalogue, drawing from their experience working with original members of the Grateful Dead in various capacities over the years. Barraco, Molo, Sless and Sears have all performed extensively with Phil Lesh & Friends. Molo and Barraco have also appeared in different incarnations of The Other Ones. All have worked with Bob Weir in a variety of projects and settings, and Sless and Sears have also worked with Bill Kreutzmann in a number of different lineups as well. This version of “Tennessee Jed” features each members’ taste and talent, with Sless’s signature guitar style dictating the feel on top of an unrelenting groove laid down by Molo’s drumming and Sear’s bass. Barraco’s keys banter back and forth with Sless in response to Skene’s vocals with Skene’s slide guitar joining in for an extened jam at the end.

California Kind has been playing together for the past three years, performing at many festivals including Dark Star Pisgah Jubilee (August 2019), Warren Haynes’s Island Exodus (January 2018), Dark Star Jubilee (May 2018), and Oregon Country Fair (2017). They have a large and ever-growing catalogue of original tunes that blend and feature each musician’s diverse influences, from swamp blues and outlaw country to California psychedelia, jazz, and classic rock. With their dense catalogue of originals and interpretation of unique covers, California Kind is becoming a fan favorite in the jam-band world, often hailed as a “Jam-Band Supergroup.” The improvisational jams the band explores are unparalleled, honed by many years spent playing together in various bands.  The addition of Katie Skene brings blues-soaked electric guitar chops, stellar vocals, and organic, original songwriting to the band. The blend of talents gives California Kind a distinctive sound that is a welcome addition to the Jam Band scene.
